FRANCE GOUACHE SKETCHBOOKS

I have always felt that I am in conversation with nineteenth century painters like Frederic Edwin Church and Thomas Moran, who worked under rigorous conditions to record minute details of strange new lands. Sketching on site helps me pay attention to the specificities of a place and my own particular experience within it. In the painted caverns of southwestern France, I outlined the sharp contrasts of lights and darks created by bizarre cave formations. These quick pencil sketches were the basis for small gouache paintings.
