I was led to Iceland through an artist residency in Yellowstone National Park in 1992. I was so fascinated with Yellowstone's dramatic volcanism that I decided to travel along the edges of tectonic plates around the globe. Looking at a volcanic map, Iceland was situated directly over the Mid-Atlantic Faultline. I have made several trips there since 1993. Iceland is a nether world of volcanoes, lava fields, geysers, caves, glaciers and icebergs. I hiked throughout the island, working in watercolor on site. Though my images are based on observation, the paintings are meant to function symbolically as states of mind.
